For over 45 Years Villari’s has been the foremost in martial arts training. With over 100 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada you will not find a stronger martial arts institution anywhere. Studying the martial arts is an excellent way to develop strength, flexibility, coordination, reflexes and timing.
What sets the martial arts apart from other sports is that it also helps build social confidence and character by reinforcing the values of self-control, respect, self-discipline and responsibility.
These qualities build inner strength and make one confident and secure in the face of life's adversities.
The physical benefits include increased energy, reduced stress, toning and strengthening your muscles, and overall improved health!
The martial arts style taught at Villari's Self-Defense Centers, Shaolin Kempo Karate, was developed and founded by Great Grandmaster Villari.
"I spent months searching the area for a martial arts school that met my fitness needs and schedule. After attending different defense institutions, I made an appointment to try the free introductory classes and was hooked. I was welcomed into a very friendly and encouraging environment where I can train and grow. Master Dave Leggeri is an amazing instructor with a great sense of humor."
"Awesome!!!!! The techniques and philosophy of this form of self defense were an unexpected surprise. I could have never imagined that Master David, though he is a 9th-degree black belt, could create so much energy and excitement about this traditional form of karate. I have been transformed -- inside and out."
"My son has been attending the [Villari's Somerville] dojo for nearly 7 years - Karate has helped him work on his focus, discipline, and balance. He enjoys both kids' classes and private sessions. I have found the staff to be excellent and very caring."
-Marc, Parent of 10yr old boy.
"It was dark out as I exited the building and headed toward my parked car. I noticed a man watching me from across the street. I increased my pace slightly as he began to move toward me looking from side to side as if to see if anyone was around. I already had my keys in my hand as I was previously taught, and was trying to gage the distance and timing to see if I would be able to get to my car, unlock the door get in and hit the power lock and be safe. He didn't know I was still watching him as he increased his pace and I knew he and I would reach my car at the same time. As I walked swiftly I placed my keys in between my fingers with the pointed end sticking out like brass knuckles and as we both reached my car instead of trying to unlock the door I stopped and looked him right in the eye. I didn't say a word just looked at him when he said in an aggressive manner "I need money and a ride." I replied back just as aggressively "We all need money and you're not getting a ride." His demeanor changed to the coward he was as he said "Oh I think my friend lives just down the street," and he moved away to the sidewalk.
The above incident happened to my student, Jennifer Swanson - Downes, as she left a language class she was attending in Cambridge, MA. Do you have the alertness and confidence to do what she did?"
-Jen, Adult Black Belt.
Master Brad was amazing with our son. He was consistent, motivating, and made real progress with him. What a resource to have in the neighborhood!

I've been studying Villari's for several years at many locations and have found my home at this location in Somerville. I'd strongly recommend anyone curious to come try a class. The school is headed by Master Brad Rogers, a gentle soul whose caring guidance will help any student find their way through their martialists journey. His supporting cast is comprised of strong personalities as well, all eager to teach and to learn every students 's needs and goals. The entire staff is welcoming, open-minded and progressive. The participants are great folks too. The school attracts great individuals and while that may not e necessarily reviewing the school itself, it's worth mentioning. While studying a martial art is a personal journal, it's best enjoyed in the company of good people. You'll find a good mix of old, young, veteran, beginner, outgoing and reserved, so on one will feel left out. If you're on the fence about coming in to check our Villari's, hop off the fence and come on in. You'll be glad you did.

After doing yoga for 5-6 years, I wanted to try something new. After some googling, I stumbled on this convenient location, went in for a free trial class - and I've been coming here ever since. Master Brad is an amazing teacher, and he runs a fantastic operation for both children and adults. It is reasonably priced, especially in comparison to other studios in the area, and you definitely feel like you get your money's worth. The people that go here are open-minded and welcoming, regardless of your martial arts ability. The upper-level belts take the time to help out us lower-level folks. When I first started, all I really wanted was a good workout, and to learn to protect myself. In addition to getting that, there are also many psychological, emotional and personal benefits. You focus on mental growth in addition to physical growth. My confidence has shot through the roof in the past 8 months! To be fair, this is my only experience with a martial arts studio - but I don't want to go anywhere else.
